I think Mr. Jefferson would be even more shocked to see the extent to which we, as the primary benefactors of his wisdom and the blood shed by his brothers in the glorious war, have so willingly rendered forth those blessings all for the illusion of the safety and protection promised by our ruling elite. It is like fleeing the wolves to take shelter in a lions den. I can hear the clanking of the chains of slavery drawing nearer and nearer, but I also hear the click of a cocked firing pin...I wonder if freedom will win the day again this time.

Dear Brad & Brian:
From visiting your blog, I know both of you are history buffs and avid readers. I have an advance review offer that I think you will find irresistible (and may inspire you to post again!): UNLIKELY ALLIES: How a Merchant, a Playwright, and a Spy saved the American Revolution (Riverhead Books, 10/29/09).
This book tells America’s history as you’ve never read it before. Author Joel Paul shares the gripping true story of three people who helped draw the French to the Americans’ side during the American Revolution by lying, cheating, stealing, and cross-dressing across Europe.
UNLIKELY ALLIES has it all: politics, sex, deception, treachery, and fashion. If you would be interested in an advance reading copy for review consideration on your blog, please email me at lydia.hirt@us.penguingroup.com
Best,
Lydia Hirt
