Founding Fathers and the Threat of Tyranny

Though I am not a big fan of YOUTUBE videos, simply because anyone can post whatever junk they feel like, I found one that I think is quite applicable to our ongoing blog discussions. The video is a conglomeration of various quotations from our Founding Fathers regarding the threat of tyranny in America. I would ask that you watch the video and then tell me what you think. Are we at a point in our nation's history where our personal liberties are threatened? Which quotes did you find to be the most poignant?

  1. I too hate YOUTUBE videos, but do recognize that there are some good ones (like this short video). You can't argue with direct quotes.

There are several quotes that I found interesting. I've always loved Washington's quote where he states, "Guard against the imposters of pretended patriotism." Every time I hear that quote I think of the Democratic and Republican Parties. People these days tend to develop a false patriotism for their particular political party, ad often ignore what is best for the country.

I also love James Madison's quote that states, "If tyranny and oppression ever come to this land, it will be in the disguise of fighting a foreign enemy." That quote has always made me think about the many wars since 1945 that this country has participated in. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq. Why exactly???

  2. Wow! I like several of them, including:

"In questions of power then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution."
    - Thomas Jefferson
"But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever."
    - John Adams

"A nation of well informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the region of ignorance that tyranny begins."
    - Benjamin Franklin

"He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression."

"When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon."

"That government is best which governs least."
    - Thomas Paine

    Thank you!
