Ellis on George Washington

I realize that I just posted an Ellis video, but I thought you all might enjoy this one in light of our "heated" debate on Lincoln v. Washington. Ellis is the author of "His Excellency," a highly praised biography on George Washington. He is a great source on the life of America's first president. My favorite quote from this video is, "Washington is the greatest hero in American history, and the truth is that even well-educated Americans know almost nothing of him." Enjoy the video!

Yep. You gotta love Washington. I think that Ellis's bio on the mas is the best one in the past 50-60 years. Excellent book!

I really do love what Joseph Ellis writes. He makes history so interesting. I've never read this book, but seeing the video makes me want to go out and buy it right now. I am glad that you guys mention authors and books so much on this blog. It helps me to know what to read.

I preferred James Thomas Flexner's The Indispensable Man to Ellis' bio.

I also think Ellis got Washington's religious faith wrong in his bio. GW was not a Deist.
